Printers produce a physical document from an electronic document onto media such as paper and transparency film. Most printers are local devices connected directly to a nearby desktop or laptop computer. Individual printers are often designed to support both local and network connected users at the same time.
Some printers can print documents stored on memory cards or from digital cameras and scanners.
Multifunction printers (MFPs) normally include a scanner and can copy paper documents, send a fax, send an email and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) the document to a folder; these are also called multi-function devices (MFD), or all-in-one (AIO) printers. Most MFPs include printing, scanning, faxing, and copying among their many features.
Network printers and Network MFPs connect directly to the local network and are used by the network users via the network.
Print servers can also manage all the printers on a Local Area Network (LAN) or a Wide Area Network (WAN). This print server controls and manages the use of the printers to ensure that the end-users only have access to what they are entitled to.
Printers can typically print from an A5 size sheet to the A4 size which is the most commonly used and also to the A3 size. Once the sheet size goes over A3 a plotter is typically utilized which is able to print from a roll of paper. Plotters are specialised printers typically used for designs and plans.
